March 31 marks the end of the Extreme Weather Protocol (additional emergency shelter mats available in the winter) leaving some to sleep outside on cold spring nights.
Many homeless people in Greater Victoria will have no choice but to sleep outside starting next week as extreme weather and winter shelters shut down March 31. “People come to rely on them and they’re not coming and going,” said Don McTavish, manager of shelters at the Cool Aid Society. “It just underscores the need for more housing in the city.”
