Seniors are over-represented among those experiencing homelessness in Greater Victoria. Like 82 year old Ginette, who is living at Rock Bay Landing because she’s unable to find appropriate housing.
It was easy to spot 82-year-old Ginette Hodgson at the Rock Bay Landing homeless shelter. She sat at the back of the lunchroom with her purse clutched to her chest and her back against the wall. A man beside her rolled a joint, while others slept hunched over tables around the room. For the past month, Hodgson has been living in a shared room at the downtown shelter because she has nowhere else to go. “I came back to Canada to stay and to die. I wanted my final years to be here,” said Hodgson, who lived on a partial old-age pension in Mexico for the past few years.
